Preliminary Task & Planning

My Preliminary Exercise Brief:
It is a continuity task involving a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. It should demonstrate continuity editing, match on match action,, shot/reverse shot and the 180° rule. It should last one minute and must include an opening shot of 10 seconds listing the students' names over a black screen.
Although it is not obligatory, my group and I will giving the film a thriller theme as my final task needs to be the opening sequence of a thriller. We also want to bring some persona and significance to the film.

My Preliminary task must include:
Continuity Editing: basically means keeping everything the same; used to smooth discontinuity in editing and establish a logical coherence between shots.
Match on Action: cutting from one camera to another during a scene to view it from a different angle. Gives the impression of continuous time.
Shot/Reverse Shot: a shot of a character looking, usually off screen, at another character followed by another shot of a different character in the same setting looking 'back' at the first character. As they are shown facing opposite ways, the viewer assumes they are looking at each other.
180° Rule: when a characters position is established in a shot, you should always from them on the side of the 'line' that keeps them on the right/left in a shot. If you do cross the line, it must be done on camera so the audience follow this.

Here is a video of our storyboard, complete with diagrams of the scenes and their duration:

Evaluation of our Storyboard:
We drew out these shots so they contained all the compulsory inclusions such as shot/reverse shot and match on action as well as two man shots, to show a relationship between the characters, and close-ups to show emotion in the characters faces. We also chose the approiate durations of the shots depending on their importnace to the task. For example, we designated 5 seconds to the mid-shot of a character sitting at the desk as it is not an important shot. We made a preliminary task so we could assess what went well and what didn't work so, hopefully, when we film our final video we won't make the same mistakes.
A short outline of the narrative...
'Girl 1' is filmed studying in the common room when she hears a loud noise from the other side of the door. Curious, she gets up and crosses the room to the door where she opens it and looks out into the corridor. She sees a strange person run from one side of the corridor to the other then disappear. She returns back into the common room, confused, then sees 'Girl 2' sitting at the table. She then exchanges lines of dialogue with her and sits down opposite her.
